The Ghana National Union of polytechnic Students have looked forward to government reconstituting the GETFund board since the expiration of the tenure of the last board of trustees two years ago but the knee jerk attitude exhibited by authorities in charge over the period has become very worrisome to us as beneficiaries of the Fund. As we are all aware, the GETFund was set up by Act 581 to supplement government’s effort in the provision of educational infrastructure, facilities and other related educational expenditure within the public sector from the pre-tertiary to the tertiary level.
The Getfund Act places the responsibility of efficient management of the fund in the hands of the Board of Trustees. To our outermost surprise, the Getfund board has not been reconstituted for over two years since the expiration of the previous Board's mandate. The government regardless of several complaints by students has turned a blind eye to constituting a new board to facilitate the operations of the Fund as enshrined in Act 581.
We do not have answers to the question of what has been happening with the activities of the Fund in relation to provisions in sections (2) and (7) of the Act. Who is currently in charge of the management of the fund?
We humbly call on the authorities responsible to as a matter of urgency, put in place a new board to govern activities and see to the full realization of the object of the Fund. The Fund as expected, must operate to support the delivery of quality education to the citizens of Ghana and ensure equitable provision of essential resources for all levels of education. This is difficult to be realized in the absence of the Board of Trustees.
GNUPS wishes to issue a two weeks ultimatum to government to constitute the Getfund Board else we shall advise ourselves accordingly.
Signed Helina Owusu (Public Relations Officer)
